MFDI Tanzania's most recent film production, Chumo, is almost complete. The film tells the story of a young poor fisherman, Juma, who is in love with the most beautiful girl in the village, Amina. Although Amina has similar feelings towards Juma, her father does not want his daughter to live an impoverished life and would prefer his daughter marry Yustus, a wealthy, but corrupted man.

There was no “music” in pre-colonial Tanzania. There was “Ngoma”: a harvest ngoma, another to raise the evil spirits. No matter the ceremony, whatever the cause, Ngoma set the beat, involving people in tradition and message. To this day, Ngoma is all about involvement, about joining rather than watching. Spectator and performer become one, and the drum beats on.
